For the longest time my brother has had "night terrors" the full shebang, dark figures standing around him, intense lights, paralysis, intense whispering/voices.
I remember the first time he told me about it, we were like, yea boy you got abducted by aliens, we where pretty young then.
He still has them, not as frequently though. He's always claimed to be able to control his dreams and now when he gets a night terror he tells me he just goes along with it and enjoys the experience.
I was always a little jealous of this, but the other night I had one myself, short and no where near as intense as his, but definitely a night terror.
I remember waking up just the tiniest bit and turning onto my side when bam, my head just went all freaky, it sounded like WhaHAHAhAHAHAHAAhaHAHHAHAhAhA, I knew I was awake and that my eyes were closed, but I don't remember fully waking.
When I woke up the next day I was like WTF was that, but I knew.
Later that day my brother came over, I just went up to him raised my hands to the sides of my head and said WHahahahHAHAhAhAHAHA, he laughed and knew exactly what I was talking about.
I don't know if I'd be freaked to get the whole 9 yards, but I guess it would be cool.

It can be a terribly upsetting thing. Your brother is handling it well.

It did upset him when he was younger, but after watching a piece about sleep paralysis on 60 minutes or something, it put his mind at ease.
Another way he puts it is it's like getting a leg cramp while you're sleeping, you figure out tricks to get out of it or ride it.
